An
Asheville high school teacher has issued a tearful apology after
anti-immigration signs that were part of a class assignment were placed
in a hallway outside her classroom,
leading to angry reactions from students and parents.
The
signs were part of teacher Jesse Reeck’s assignment for a civics and
economics class at Erwin High School. One sign said "Illegals Go Home"
and another read "America
is for Americans."
There were other signs that promoted unity in the country with slogans such as “We are one” and "Equality."
Reeck apologized on Wednesday for what she called a poor choice to display the assignment in the hallway.
Students,
parents and community leaders gathered in the school's auditorium,
demanding to know what consequences Reeck will face.
A meeting held to address the matter was supposed to last 30 minutes, but people refused to leave until they could speak.
The school has not released any additional information on the outcome of the meeting.
