2016
hopeful Sen. Lindsey Graham said on Wednesday that GOP presidential
candidate Donald Trump is constructing a divide between Republicans and
the Hispanic community.
“I
think the wall Donald Trump is building is between us and Hispanics,”
he told hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on MSNBC’s “Morning
Joe.”
The
South Carolina senator argued that Trump’s immigration rhetoric is
inspiring an increasingly absurd Republican primary this election cycle.
“A
lot of our guys are taking the bait,” Graham said of the GOP’s
presidential field next year. “Another 9/11 is coming and we are talking
about a lot of silly things.”
Graham
cited Trump’s claim that he would force Mexico into building a wall on
America’s southern border as proof he is not serious about the issue of
immigration.
“Over time, we will realize that the next president needs to straighten out a world that is falling about,” Graham said.
“Pay attention to the guy on national security,” he added of Trump. “He makes no sense.”
Graham
additionally took aim at retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, another one
of his rivals in the race for next year’s GOP presidential nomination.
“If he had convinced me, I wouldn’t be here,” he said of Carson.
“He’s a nice person in an industry where most people are jerks,” Graham added of Carson’s surge in multiple national polls.
