Obama: Political ‘Suicide’ for GOP to Shun Immigration Overhaul

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – President Barack Obama said it would be political “suicide” for Republicans not to back legislation overhauling the immigration system, and predicted that legislation would happen during his final two years in office.

Mr. Obama, asked Thursday about immigration policy during a town hall with young professionals, insisted he’s still planning to take executive action on immigration, including steps that would make the legal immigration system more efficient for businesses.

But Mr. Obama offered a pointed critique of the GOP on immigration reform that was more akin to disingenuous political advice, saying he is “in a position now where we’re going to have to see what Republicans are going to do after the election.”

“What I am committed to is, assuming Congress does not act, I will use all the executive authority that I legally have” to make changes to the immigration system,” Mr. Obama said.

“It’s anybody’s guess how Republicans are thinking about this. If they were thinking long-term politically, it is suicide for them not to do this,” he added. “Because the demographics of the country are such where you are going to lose an entire generation of immigrations who are looking around and saying, ‘You know what? That party doesn’t seem to care much about me.’”

Mr. Obama went on to say “the smarter Republicans” understand the politics of immigration reform. But in the short term, “they’ve got a problem” because some in the GOP, such as tea party activists, promote “anti-immigrant sentiment.”
