Gov. Scott Walker sees some similarities between his policy proposals
on immigration reform and the immigration reform blueprint real estate
mogul Donald Trump
laid out on Sunday.
Walker,
speaking Monday on Fox & Friends, said he hadn’t given the details
of Trump’s proposal a thorough read but did see some parallels.
“Well
it’s similar to what I brought up about four or five months ago. In
fact earlier in the year I was on Fox News Sunday and laid out what I
thought we should do which
is secure the border which means build the wall, have the technology,
have the personnel to make sure it’s safe and secure,” Walker said.
“Enforce the law, which I’ve said for some time means enforcing the law,
making sure we don’t have sanctuary cities and
that people are here legally. And I’ve said no amnesty.”
Trump’s
blueprint calls for a wall to be constructed across the U.S.’s border
with Mexico, and that Mexico should pay for the wall. The proposal also
includes beefing
up the “enforcement arm” of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement
department and funding that by cutting “tax credit payments to illegal
immigrants.” It also calls for “mandatory return of all criminal aliens”
or, rather, deporting the roughly 11 million
immigrants living in the country illegally.
Asked later in the interview if he was giving Trump’s proposal a “thumbs up,” Walker made sure not to go quite that far.
“Well,
again I haven’t looked at all the details of his but the things I’ve
heard are very similar to the things I’ve mentioned to Chris Wallace on
the show earlier this
year,” Walker said.
In an interview on Monday, Walker, in a response to a question from MSNBC, said that he supported ending birthright citizenship.
“Yeah.
To me it’s about enforcing the laws in this country,” Walker said in
response to being asked if he supported ending birthright citizenship.
