Donald
Trump received a key endorsement for his immigration platform Friday
night: Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.), one of the strongest proponents of
restricting immigration
in Congress.
Mr.
Sessions appeared with Mr. Trump, wearing the Trump campaign’s
signature “Make America Great Again” baseball cap, at a rally at a
football stadium in Mobile, Ala.
“I’m
really impressed with your plan,” Mr. Sessions said while standing on
stage with Mr. Trump. “I know it will make a difference and this crowd
shows a lot of people
agree with that.”
Mr.
Trump’s appearance in Alabama included his signature attacks against
Republican rival Jeb Bush. He tweaked Mr. Bush for using the term
“anchor babies” in reference
to American-born children of undocumented immigrants. Mr. Bush had in
the past advised Republican candidates not to use the term, which
offends many Latinos.
“Now that I’m using it,” Mr. Trump said, “he’s using it.”
As
Mr. Trump took the stage, Mr. Bush’s campaign and its allied super PAC
mounted their most substantial pushback against him. An airplane flew
over the football stadium
with a banner reading “Trump for higher taxes. Jeb for president.” The
Twitter account for Mr. Bush’s super PAC posted a photo of the plane and
its message.
Meanwhile
Mr. Bush’s campaign sent an email to its supporters in Alabama
attacking the New York developer. “Beneath Trump’s bluster is a record
that would make Hillary
Clinton proud,” the campaign’s email said.
