Poll: Most Hispanics have a negative view of Trump

Politico Poll

Donald Trump may say he’ll win the Latino vote, but three out of four Hispanic adults have a negative view of the real estate mogul, according to a new poll.

The poll, conducted by The Wall Street Journal, NBC News and Telemundo, found that just 13 percent of Hispanic Americans view him favorably.

Trump is an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration and has said that he will build a giant wall and have Mexico pay for it.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people,” he said when he announced his campaign for the White House.

His comments prompted Univision to announce it would not show the Miss Universe pageant. Trump is suing the company for $500 million for breach of contract.

Fifty-five percent of those surveyed said that Trump’s comments were “insulting and racist and have no place in a campaign for president.”

One in two Hispanics said they thought his views did not reflect the rest of the Republican Party, but 29 percent said he was speaking for most Republicans.

Trump has defended his remarks.

“I have a great relationship with the Mexican people. I have many people working for me — look at the job in Washington — I have many legal immigrants working with me. And many of them come from Mexico. They love me, I love them,” he said in an interview with NBC News in July. “And I’ll tell you something: If I get the nomination, I’ll win the Latino vote.”

The poll of 250 adults was conducted July 26-30. The poll has a margin of error of 6.2 percent.
