'Slap in the Face' for Donald Trump to Host SNL, Says Latino Group

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is set to host "Saturday Night Live" on November 7th and the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), has slammed the decision, calling it a "slap in the face" to Latino viewers.

"This is not about lacking a sense of humor. Everyone knows that SNL is not just a comedy show. For the last 40 years, it has become a highly coveted platform for candidates from political parties who are looking to reach and connect with the American public," said Janet Murguía, President and CEO of NCLR.

"It is appalling, then, [for] a show with that history and that role to showcase a man whose campaign has been built on bigotry and demagoguery for the sake of buzz and ratings," Murguía said.

This will be Trump's second time hosting SNL, having previously hosted the April 3, 2004 episode.

Trump hosted and was the executive producer of NBC's "The Apprentice and "The Celebrity Apprentice" for years. Trump and NBC were joint partners in the Miss Universe Organization, but over the summer NBC terminated its relationship with Trump after his controversial comments about immigrants from Mexico at the start of his presidential campaign.

"NBC made the right decision last June to sever its ties with Trump over his blatantly anti-Latino campaign announcement. Since then he has only gotten worse and more divisive, so this change of heart is even more troubling," said Murguía. NCLR is urging SNL and NBC to reconsider "this ill-advised decision."

SNL said to NBC Latino they are not commenting on NCLR's statement.

Félix Sánchez, from the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, also criticized the decision to have Trump host the show. "You're letting someone call Mexicans rapists and murderers and the welcome mat gets put out," said Sánchez. He also said his group has been trying to meet with SNL's executive producer Lorne Michaels for years; "in its 41st season they have never had a Latina cast member and only two male Latino cast members."

Others took to Twitter to slam Trump's upcoming appearance.
