Des Moines Register: Trump should bow out

Politico

The Des Moines Register, long Iowa’s most influential newspaper, published an editorial Monday night calling for Donald Trump to renounce his candidacy for president.

Trump, the editorial states, has become “a feckless blowhard who can generate headlines, name recognition and polling numbers not by provoking thought, but by provoking outrage.”

The strongly worded opinion piece outlines the many perceived inadequacies that have accrued over the five-week period since Trump made his initial bid for public office, arguing that presidential contenders usually perform “a great public service.”

The GOP contender and real-estate mogul, the editorial board argues, has focused on personal promotion without public service.

The editorial goes on to explain that Trump’s apparent lack of bona fides required to serve as president of the United States, coupled with his recent “attempts to demonize immigrants as rapists and drug dealers” and attacks on the Vietnam military record of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) are a poor mix for highest office.

“His comments were not merely offensive, they were disgraceful. So much so, in fact, that they threaten to derail not just his campaign, but the manner in which we choose our nominees for president,” the editorial argues.

“By using his considerable wealth, his celebrity status, and his mouth to draw attention to himself, rather than to raise awareness of the issues facing America, he has coarsened our political dialogue and cheapened the electoral process.”

The piece concludes that Trump could be taking up valuable television real-estate for candidates who are not leading in the polls and could be disqualified from participating in upcoming debates.

“The best way Donald Trump can serve his country is by apologizing to McCain and terminating this ill-conceived campaign.”
