The
key to passing comprehensive immigration reform is a Republican
takeover of the U.S. Senate, former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney
argued on "Fox News Sunday."
“You’re
going to see a provision, first of all, to secure the border," Romney
said. "Second of all, to deal with those who come here illegally.
And third, to make sure our immigration policies are more open and
transparent … That’s going to happen. You’re going to see a bill
actually reach the desk of the president if we finally have someone
besides Harry Reid sitting in the Senate. So, we’re going
to get it done.”
Romney's
claim may sound a tad odd given that it was House Republicans who, in
2013, blocked Senate legislation that contained precisely the
same points mentioned by the former Massachusetts governor. According
to Romney, however, the GOP may simply have been biding its time.
"We’re going to get it done.”
Mitt Romney
"I
think Republicans in the House were looking at what was coming from the
Senate saying, 'You know what? We can do better if we pick up more
seats in the Senate,'" said Romney. "I can't tell you whether we're
going to win the Senate, but we're going to pick up a lot of seats and
we have a lot better prospect of having a piece of legislation which
deals with the issue in the way I described."
In
order to avoid big losses in the 2016 election, Republicans know that
they must find a way to chip into the Democrats' large lead among Latino
voters, and President Obama has promised that he will use a series of
executive orders following the midterm election to try and address the
legal status of millions of illegal immigrants.
