White House legislative affairs director Marc Short suggested today that President Donald Trump might be open to a narrower immigration deal to protect DREAMers brought to the United States as children.
At a White House press briefing, Short was asked whether the president would consider an agreement that didn’t satisfy all four pillars laid out in the administration’s immigration framework.
“The president has been very open to continued negotiations on this,” Short said, avoiding a clear answer. “He’s anxious to get a deal.”
Short said Trump values border security, but also recognizes the predicament of enrollees in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. “He wants to protect them,” Short said.
Trump announced in September that he would terminate the Obama-era DACA program, but a federal judge in January ordered the administration to resume renewals pending the outcome of litigation.
A frantic round of Senate negotiations in February failed to advance any legislation. Short blamed Democrats for the current stalemate. “So far Democrats don’t seem to actually want to come to the table,” he said. “They want to politicize the issue.”
