A spokesperson for the Greyhound bus company said today that the law requires it to allow U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers to board its vehicles and question passengers about their immigration status.
Ten groups affiliated with the American Civil Liberties Union sent a letter to the company today that urged it to stop the practice, saying the actions show “a blatant disregard for passengers’ constitutional rights.”
Crystal Booker, a Greyhound spokesperson, confirmed the company had received the letter.
“We understand their concerns and those of our customers with regard to this matter,” Booker said. “However, Greyhound is required to comply with the law. We are aware that routine transportation checks not only affect our operations, but our customers’ travel experience and will continue to do everything legally possible to minimize any negative experiences.”
Booker said the company is engaged in discussions with Border Patrol about the issue.
