Sen.
Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said President Obama’s administration has failed
to enforce U.S. immigration law and therefore created an “open borders”
situation.
“This
is open borders,” Sessions said on the Senate floor Thursday. “If you
get past the border and into the interior ... then you can just stay.
This cannot be the policy
of the United States of America.”
Sessions
said the administration has essentially said it will only deport people
if they are caught crossing the border or they commit a felony once
inside the United
States.
“They
say openly that we’re not going to deport people except those that
commit serious crimes, which apparently does not include DUI,” Sessions
said. “Ninety-four percent
of the people removed were either those caught crossing the border or
those who committed a serious crime.”
The
Obama administration has touted deportation numbers higher than any
other president, but Sessions said they are deliberately misleading in
the way they count deportations.
The
administration has said it will not deport children brought into the
country by their parents without documentation, called Dreamers by some.
And more recently Obama
suggested he would expand that deferred action program.
The
Senate passed bipartisan immigration reform last year, but the House
has refused to act. Sessions has applauded the House’s inaction, saying
more immigration harms
struggling U.S. workers.
