Lawyers challenge denial of deportation protection renewal

Associated Press
October 26, 2017

ATLANTA — Lawyers for a Mexican woman whose case made national headlines when she was a Georgia college student seven years ago are challenging immigration authorities’ refusal to renew her protection from deportation.

Immigration authorities this week decided not to renew Jessica Colotl’s protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Her lawyers say the government says it denied her application because she’s in deportation proceedings. But, they say, that was the case when she was previously granted the protected status, and the government’s own guidance says people in that situation are still eligible.

Colotl’s attorneys said Thursday that the government is failing to comply with a previous order by the court that instructed the government to follow its own rules when reconsidering Colotl’s renewal application.
