The AFL-CIO sent a letter today to top lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee that implores them to support a “clean” version of a bill to protect undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children.
The letter urges Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the committee’s chairman, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the ranking member, to support the DREAM Act, S. 1615 (115).
The measure would provide a path to legal status and eventual citizenship to an estimated 1.8 million undocumented immigrants, including nearly 800,000 approved for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Bill Samuel, the federation’s director of government affairs, said the DREAM Act “will ensure safer workplaces” and “build a stronger economic future.”
Grassley won’t likely support a vote on the legislation without including other elements.
During a Judiciary hearing this morning, he said a possible DACA deal should include border security, mandatory E-Verify and “steps to ensure speedy deportation for those who deserve it.”
