U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue said today that Congress “needs to act quickly” to protect young undocumented immigrants covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
In a blog post on the Chamber website, Donohue observed that Congress had a busy agenda this fall even before President Donald Trump “added a major item to the to-do list” by phasing out the DACA program.
The Trump administration plans to wind down DACA over two-and-a-half years, but an early deadline looms this week.
DACA enrollees with permits that expire between Sept. 5 and March 5 — a cohort of 154,000 people — need to submit their renewal applications by Thursday or risk losing the status.
“DACA recipients are our friends, neighbors and co-workers,” Donohue wrote. “The Chamber urges Congress to work quickly through the details of a legislative solution that treats these individuals with dignity and fairness.”
