Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke today urged eligible undocumented immigrants to renew their enrollment in a program that grants them access to temporary work permits.
The Trump administration announced last month that it would wind down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allows undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children to apply for work authorization.
The administration is allowing 154,000 people with permits that expire between Sept. 5 and March 5 to renew for a period of two years, but applications must reach DHS by Thursday.
So far, 106,000 DACA enrollees — a little more than two-thirds of those eligible — have applied for renewals or been previously approved, according to the announcement today .
Duke said during a Senate committee hearing last week that she could not guarantee that DACA application data would not be used for enforcement purposes.
The acting secretary also said applications from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, both devastated by hurricanes, would be considered on a case-by-case basis by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
“As of today, fewer than 20 current recipients from the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico have yet to renew with USCIS,” she said in a written statement.
