Rep. Charlie Gonzalez (D-Texas) spoke at the Democratic convention of President Obama's commitment to Hispanic-Americans and accused Mitt Romney of backing racial profiling.
"Romney has embraced the racial profiling policies of Governor Jan Brewer and Sheriff Joe Arpaio," he argued. He was referring to the Arizona governor and the sheriff of Maricopa County, champions of the Arizona law that would require law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of anyone they stop if they have reason to believe that person is in the country illegally.
Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.) spoke next and offered a similar theme, saying Romney works with people who disrespect us
people who do not believe the American Dream means all of us.
Romney campaign spokesman Alberto Martinez shot back that the comments show Democrats are desperate: "Since he hasn't accomplished anything of importance to Hispanics, it's no surprise that President Obama and his allies have resorted to making outrageous and untrue statements."
President Obama has criticized Romney for supporting the Arizona law, but did not answer when asked by a Univision reporter if the policy amounted to racial profiling. He simply called it very troublesome.
