Federal immigration officials say nearly 300 immigrants living in Massachusetts will become U.S. citizens during a naturalization ceremony at Fitchburg State University.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services says U.S. District Judge Timothy Hillman is scheduled to administer the Oath of Allegiance at the ceremony set for Thursday morning.

The 296 candidates for citizenship come from 60 countries, including Haiti, India, Kenya, Mexico, Philippines, Somalia, Syria, Turkey, Uganda, the United Kingdom, Uruguay and Vietnam.

Massachusetts has the seventh-largest population of legal immigrants in the country, with about 320,000 people holding green cards given to legal permanent U.S. residents in 2010.
