President Trump on Tuesday said Democrats aren’t interested in fixing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, arguing advocates for the program will ult.
“Democrats are doing nothing for DACA — just interested in politics. DACA activists and Hispanics will go hard against Dems, will start ‘falling in love’ with Republicans and their President!” Trump tweeted.
Congress is poised for a showdown over the future of DACA, an Obama-era program that allows certain immigrants — often called Dreamers — who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children to stay here to work or go to school.
Congressional leaders from both parties are expected to discuss the program during a meeting on Wednesday at the White House.
Democrats insisted they wouldn’t leave Washington for a holiday break without a solution in place for DACA, but Congress ultimately agreed to take up the issue in early 2018.
The Trump administration announced in September it would end the program, giving Congress six months to come up with a long-term solution.
Trump has previously said that Democrats “fully understand” that a DACA fix will require funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Trump has received criticism in the past for his comments on immigrants and on Mexicans.
He has in the past suggested a federal judge of Mexican heritage was biased against him and at his campaign launch in 2015 he said that Mexico was sending “rapists” and other criminals into the U.S.
