Dems release pro-Dreamer video series

The Hill

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Tuesday released a series of videos designed to promote passage of the DREAM Act, moments after President Trump accused Democrats of “doing nothing for DACA.”

The video series, “American DREAMing,” shows statistics and personal stories of so-called Dreamers — immigrants who were brought to the country illegally as minors.

Trump rescinded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in September, which temporarily allowed 800,000 Dreamers to live and work in the United States legally. He gave Congress a six-month timetable to come up with a legislative solution for Dreamers.

Xochitl Hinojosa, communications director for the DNC, told The Hill the party would continue to produce new installments in the series “until Congress passes the DREAM Act.”

About 690,000 beneficiaries were still enrolled in the program in September; about 122 have lost their benefits every day since the program’s rollback began in October. That number will rapidly accelerate if no legislation is passed before the March 5 deadline to replace the Obama-era DACA executive order.

The DREAM Act is the Democrats’ preferred legislative proposal to replace DACA.

As currently written, the bill would protect nearly two million Dreamers from deportation while providing few concessions to Republicans who want border security and immigration enforcement measures.

In a tweet Tuesday, President Trump accused Democrats of playing politics with DACA.

“Democrats are doing nothing for DACA — just interested in politics. DACA activists and Hispanics will go hard against Dems, will start ‘falling in love’ with Republicans and their President!” Trump tweeted.

Republicans have long accused Democrats of intransigence when negotiating on immigration, and shifting the blame to the GOP when talks ultimately fail.

Hinojosa dismissed that idea, putting blame on Trump.

“Let’s get the facts straight: Obama created DACA. Trump ended DACA,” said Hinojosa.
