HOUSE REPUBLICANS PUSH FOR DACA: Sixteen House Republicans today will urge Congress to find a legislative solution for DACA enrollees before the end of this year. As best Morning Shift can recall, it’s the first time House Republicans have held a press event in support of Dreamers. None of the lawmakers belongs to an informal working group on DACA overseen by House Speaker Paul Ryan.
The coalition hosting today’s event is led by Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.) and includes many blue and purple state Republicans. In attendance (get ready for a list) will be Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), Charlie Dent (R-Pa.), Dave Reichert (R-Wash.), Don Bacon (R-Neb.), Fred Upton (R-Mich.), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), Jeff Denham (R-Calif.), Joe Barton (R-Texas), Leonard Lance (R-N.J.), Mike Coffman (R-Colo.), Pete King (R-N.Y.), Ryan Costello (R-Pa.), Scott Taylor (R-Va.), Susan Brooks (R-Ind.), John Faso (R-N.Y.).
The Newhouse group’s strategy isn’t clear (and Newhouse’s office didn’t respond to a request for comment). But the thumping suburban Republicans took in Tuesday’s elections certainly grabbed the attention of both parties. “Voters are taking their anger out at the president, and the only way they can do that is by going after Republicans on the ballot,” Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Pa.) told the New York Times. “If this isn’t a wake-up call, I don’t know what is.” Dent, as noted above, will participate in today’s DACA press conference. The event will take place at 9:20 a.m. in the House Visitors Center Studio A. Watch a livestream here.
