The Hill

Libertarian presidential candidate and former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson denounced presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump’s border security and illegal immigration plans on Monday, saying his ideas sound unhinged.
“Insanity comes to mind,” Johnson said on CNN’s “The Lead." "Look, this is really rooted in misinformation."
Johnson dismissed Trump's famous assertion that the Mexicans illegally crossing America's southern border are "rapists" who bring drugs and crime to the U.S.
"They’re not murderers and rapists," he said. "Statistically they commit far less crimes than U.S. citizens. They’re not taking jobs that U.S. citizens want. We should make it as easy as possible for someone who wants to come into this country to work to get a work visa.”
Johnson also defended his Libertarian running mate for invoking Nazi Germany last week while describing Trump’s deportation strategies.
William Weld, the former GOP governor of Massachusetts, linked Trump’s platform with Kristallnacht, a notorious incident when the Nazis killed nearly 100 Jews.
“Absolutely, absolutely,” Johnson on Monday said when asked if he supports Weld’s analysis. "What are we going to do?"
