Biden shreds Trump's taco tweet

Joe Biden was not impressed with Donald Trump’s taco tweet.

The vice president weighed in on the divisive viral photo the presumptive Republican nominee posted on social media on Thursday, posing with a taco bowl to celebrate Cinco de Mayo along with the caption “I love Hispanics!”

Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics! https://www.facebook.com/DonaldTrump/posts/10157008375200725:0 …

— Donald J. Trump (‎@realDonaldTrump) 2:57 PM - 5 May 2016

“I wish he were a smarter guy than this," Biden told Washington, D.C.'s FOX 5 News on Friday. "I hope he reaches the point where he figures out that it’s not a game show and he talks in earnest about where he would take the country. Because that is the kind of debate the public deserves.”

"I know Hillary [Clinton] or Bernie [Sanders], if he is the nominee, will do that," Biden continued. "But the American public deserves genuine debate at this moment in our history on the direction of the country — whether we continue the direction we are on and moving forward or are we making a significant change. I’m not sure he knows."

Many Hispanics — and plenty of others — saw Trump’s post, which has so far been retweeted more than 81,000 times, as a crude attempt to mend fences with a group he's angered with his calls to deport undocumented immigrants and build a wall along the Mexican border.

Trump defended the tweet on Fox News Friday, claiming "people loved it" and arguing, "I'm going to do great with Hispanics."

Asked about the tweet during a POLITICO Playbook breakfast on Friday, Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said simply, "He's trying."
