A
conservative immigration group is pushing back against calls to end
birthright citizenship and for the mass deportation of people living
illegally in the United States.
Daniel
Garza, executive director of The Libre Initiative, said in a letter
this week that ending the policy granting automatic citizenship to
almost everyone born in the
U.S. and deporting the millions living in the country illegally would
“intrude on the lives of law-abiding Americans, or impose an unwarranted
cost on the taxpayers.”
“Such proposals are not in line with our principles and are not in the best interest of our country,” Mr. Garza said
Mr. Garza called for “reasonable” enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws.
The
issue of immigration has been a hot topic in the 2016 GOP nomination
race, thanks in large part to real estate mogul Donald Trump. Last
month, Mr. Trump pushed the
issue of birthright citizenship to the forefront of the race and
promised to build a border wall and have Mexico pay for it, all part of
his six-page crackdown plan.
Others,
including Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal
have since suggested that elected leaders might want to rethink
birthright citizenship.
