California’s Gavin Newsom Chides Donald Trump on Immigration Plan (and Comb-Over)

Donald J. Trump is getting a chilly welcome to California from Gavin Newsom, the state’s lieutenant governor.

Mr. Newsom, a Democrat who is planning to run for governor in 2018, got a head start attacking Mr. Trump and his immigration policies on Monday, releasing an online ad that derides his plan and mocks his hair.

“It’s a perfect time to show you the truth behind his immigration ideas and how they’ll hurt all of us,” Mr. Newsom says, as an animation of Mr. Trump, his comb-over flopping in the wind, descends from his private jet and onto the debate stage.

The advertisement goes on to argue that Mr. Trump’s promised wall along the border with Mexico would be unfeasible and that the cost of deporting illegal immigrants en masse would sink the economy.

Mr. Newsom is getting an early start on his campaign, and other Democrats are likely to imitate his strategy of making Mr. Trump the face of the Republican Party. Mr. Newsom has been critical of Mr. Trump since he announced his presidential run, warning in July that Mr. Trump’s remarks about immigrants are dangerous.

Like many of the lawmakers who have been critical of Mr. Trump, Mr. Newsom received a donation from the billionaire developer in the past. To unburden his conscience, Mr. Newsom said over the summer that he was giving the $2,500 gift from Mr. Trump to organizations that aid immigrants.
