US election updates: Polls show close race as Harris, Trump rally in Nevada

‘Trump using immigration to agitate his base’ Vanessa Cardenas, executive director of America’s Voice, has called Trump “one of the most, if not the most, anti-immigration presidential candidate” in modern-day US history. Speaking to Al Jazeera, she said the 78-year-old Republican is using immigration as a political tool to agitate his base, espousing “some of the most cruel, most extreme and most racist policies we have seen”. Cardenas added Trump’s proposed mass deportation programme would target not just immigrants but also American families. “Five million US kids have at least one undocumented parent, so when he talks about deporting immigrants, he’s actually talking about affecting Americans in his entire economy,” she added. Cardenas called Trump’s harsh rhetoric an attempt to “rehash his own history” and track record while in office. “We know that under his administration, the immigration system was broken just as it was before, but he’s instituted very extreme policies like the Muslim ban, family separations, that the United States population was actually very much against. And he also instituted policies like Title 42 – and why? Because he did not have control over the border.” Title 42 was a controversial COVID-19 pandemic-era health rule that allowed US authorities to turn away most asylum seekers at the border with Mexico, with critics calling it a guise to prevent migrants from coming to the US – despite the right to seek asylum being guaranteed under international law – and health experts saying it had few public health justifications. Cuban, an owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and celebrity investor on the show Shark Tank, warned the crowd that if Trump is elected in November, his tariffs proposal would make holiday gifts cost 60 percent more. “You won’t be able to afford the presents you want for your family and friends,” he said. The choice, he said, is to elect Harris. Cuban has been the target of Trump surrogates after he disparaged pro-Trump women on the television programme The View. “You never see” Trump “around strong, intelligent women – ever”, he said. The statement drew immediate rebuke from Republican women, including Trump’s campaign chief, Susie Wiles. “I’m told @mcuban needs help identifying the strong and intelligent women surrounding Pres. Trump. Well, here we are!” Trump’s campaign chief, Susie Wiles, wrote on social media. Campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt also went after Cuban. “This is extremely insulting to the thousands of women who work for President Trump, and the tens of millions of women who are voting for him,” she said in a statement.
