President Trump used two examples of criminal acts by foreign nationals to bash so-called "sanctuary" jurisdictions in New York City and the state of California.
Trump, at his State of the Union address, talked about the case of a man in New York who was charged with raping and murdering a 92-year-old woman.
"The killer had been previously arrested for assault, but under New York's sanctuary policies, he was set free. If the city had honored ICE's detainer request, his victim would be alive today," said Trump.
And Trump introduced a guest in the gallery, Jody Jones, whose brother Rocky was shot and killed by an undocumented immigrant in California in 2018.
"Here is just one tragic example. In December 2018, California police detained an illegal alien with five prior arrests, including convictions for robbery and assault. But as required by California's Sanctuary Law, local authorities released him," said Trump.
Trump touted legislation introduced by Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) to allow victims of criminals who could have been subject to deportation to sue so-called "sanctuary" jurisdictions.
Sanctuary jurisdictions are not defined by law, but are generally understood to be cities and states that refuse to detain arrested undocumented immigrants beyond the time determined by criminal statute.
