WASHINGTON — Legislation aimed at abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement is being pushed by liberal Democrats. They believe the issue can galvanize voters for midterms.
House Speaker Paul Ryan says the proposal makes him “feel very good” about November elections, and Republicans have moved toward scheduling a vote.
One Democratic sponsor says backers of the measure plan to vote against their own bill because the legislation was aimed at focusing attention on President Donald Trump’s policies.
The dueling views of the bill’s potential impact are the latest example of how immigration looms as a vote-moving issue this fall.
