California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) took aim at President Trump Wednesday for his comments at a roundtable on so-called sanctuary cities in California, saying that the president was “lying” about immigration and the state’s laws.
“@realDonaldTrump is lying on immigration, lying about crime and lying about the laws of CA,” Brown tweeted, including a Pinocchio emoji.
“Flying in a dozen Republican politicians to flatter him and praise his reckless policies changes nothing,” he continued. “We, the citizens of the fifth largest economy in the world, are not impressed.”
Trump held the session on California’s sanctuary cities at the White House earlier Wednesday. The roundtable featured state and federal officials who oppose the policies protecting immigrants living in the U.S. illegally.
During the session Trump blamed Democrats for his administration’s policies on separating families who illegally enter the U.S.
“The Democrats gave us that law. It’s a horrible thing we have to break up families,” Trump said.
Trump also referred to some immigrants who are gang members as “animals” after a California county sheriff said she was frustrated by the state’s sanctuary laws.
The Trump administration has repeatedly targeted California over the state’s policies limiting local authorities’ cooperation with federal officials on immigration enforcement.
The Justice Department sued the state of California over three so-called sanctuary laws passed to protect immigrants without legal status, in response to Trump administration policies.
