More than 30 immigration advocates were arrested near the Capitol on Thursday after they blocked the street in a protest demanding that Congress pass a bill that provides a pathway to citizenship for those in the U.S. illegally.
“I am proud to join my friends in this simple act of conscience. Immigration reform with a path to citizenship is a defining issue for our generation,” said a statement prepared in advance by Frank Sharry, executive director of America’s Voice, one of the activists who planned to be arrested.
At a rally following the arrests, some people sought to remind Republicans, who have resisted citizenship for those who broke the law to come here, of the politics surrounding the issue. “Republicans, remember: We’re voting in November,” they chanted.
The event comes ahead of a congressional recess in which activists on both sides of the issue hope to lobby lawmakers in their districts. “In the month of August… we must make sure that our voices are heard throughout the United States,” said Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D., Ill.)
House Republicans have said they will consider immigration legislation in pieces, rather than in one comprehensive bill. So far, no bills offering legal status for the 11 million illegal immigrants have passed through committees, though GOP leaders have said they will consider legislation aiding those who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.
