Trump signs spending bill to avoid shutdown

President Trump on Friday signed a $1 trillion spending bill to fund the government through the end of September.

Trump approved the measure at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., where he is spending a long weekend, according to White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

The president was expected to sign the bill, but the White House had sent mixed messages about whether officials were happy with it.

Trump this week praised the measure as a “clear win” just hours after calling for a government shutdown in September to fix a “mess” in the Senate.

Lawmakers left out many of Trump’s top priorities in the funding bill, including money for his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and a provision stripping federal dollars from “sanctuary cities” that resist federal immigration laws.

But the measure did boost defense spending by $21 billion without an accompanying spike in domestic spending, something Republicans championed as a major victory.
