A year after marking Cinco de Mayo by professing his love for Hispanics — and Trump Tower Grill’s taco bowls — President Donald Trump commemorated the Mexican holiday on Friday by celebrating “the incredible courage and resolve of the Mexican people.”

“My warmest wishes to all those celebrating Cinco de Mayo on this 155th anniversary of the Battle of Puebla,” the president said in a statement.

“The Battle of Puebla reminds us of the incredible courage and resolve of the Mexican people as they fought for their country and defended their freedom. On May 5, 1862, General Ignacio Zaragoza’s Mexican forces withstood the French assault on the town of Puebla de Los Angeles, despite being outnumbered and underequipped,” the statement read.

“The Battle of Puebla remains an important symbol of Mexican bravery and tenacity.”

Last year, Trump tweeted a picture of himself eating a taco bowl while giving a thumbs-up.

“Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!” he tweeted.

Trump’s administration has targeted undocumented immigrants through executive orders seeking to ramp up detentions and deportations, and is seeking to fulfill a campaign pledge to “build a wall” on the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump also called Mexicans “rapists” during a speech announcing his candidacy for president.

In his Friday statement, Trump also said Cinco de Mayo remembers “the heroic victory of the Mexican Army over the invading forces of Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla” and that the celebration pays “tribute to the proud Mexican heritage it exemplifies.”

“We also honor the Mexican-Americans whose fighting spirit and patriotism have been influential in shaping the character of our great Nation.”
