The
San Francisco Sheriff's Department requested the transfer and provided
transportation from federal prison to the city jail for a Mexican
national in the country illegally
who is now charged with randomly murdering a woman.
Department
lawyer Freya Horne said Wednesday that Bureau of Prison officials
notified the sheriff on March 23 that Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez was
to be released and
had an outstanding felony warrant for marijuana possession. Horne said
department policy is to request transfers of all prison inmates being
released who have outstanding felony warrants.
Horne
said it is unclear why the 1995 warrant wasn't noticed the several
times Sanchez has been released from prison over the last two decades.
Sanchez would have been transferred to immigration authorities if the sheriff declined to take him.
