Jeb
Bush declared Wednesday night that his love for his Mexican-American
wife was entirely compatible with his views on tightening the border
with Mexico, calling an online
skirmish started by Donald Trump over the weekend “ludicrous” and
“bizarre.”
Answering
a question about squaring his affection for Mexican heritage with his
approach to illegal immigration, Mr. Bush seemed eager to resolve the
issue, which was
raised in a message that Mr. Trump disseminated on Twitter on July 4
and later deleted.
The
original message suggested that Mr. Bush was compelled to favor
undocumented Mexican immigrants because his wife, Columba, is from the
country.
Seizing
on “this weird little controversy I am not a big party to,” Mr. Bush
embarked on an expansive tribute to his wife during the
question-and-answer portion of a town-hall-style
meeting at a crowded veterans hall.
“My
wife is from Mexico,” he said. “I love her dearly. Been married for 41
years. I am not going to stop loving my wife. I’m pretty comfortable
with that position. I’ll
stick with it for a while.”
But,
he continued: “You can love the Mexican culture and love your
Mexican-American wife and also believe we need to control the border.
This is a bizarre kind of idea
that somehow you can have an affection for people in a different
country and not think the rule of law should apply. This is ludicrous.”
