LGBT Protesters Sit-In Marco Rubio's Office

Politico

Three LGBT activists were arrested at Sen. Marco Rubio’s Tampa, Fla., office Tuesday after holding a sit-in to protest the senator’s position on same-sex couple rights in immigration reform and workplace discrimination.

According to the LGBT group GetEQUAL, the organization was also protesting Rubio’s support of a border surge, and they claim one of his staff members told police responding to the protest that a GetEQUAL co-director was in the country illegally.

University of South Florida Police confirmed that Tuesday afternoon, three people were led away, charged with trespassing and obstruction and released. A police spokeswoman said that the group was demonstrating peacefully, but was interfering with the business of the office and so were asked to leave. The three arrested did not leave when asked by officers.

Police had no information as to whether an officer asked the GetEQUAL member about his immigration status and checked his driver’s license, as the group claims. The man in question is an undocumented immigrant with a work permit under the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, according to the group.

A spokesman for Rubio referred Politico to the police and did not respond to a request for comment.

The arrests came at the same time that Rubio was speaking in Washington about his immigration efforts and responded to questions about his opposition to same-sex rights in the Senate bill.
