Sergio Romo Makes a Play in Immigration Debate

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE (Editorial)
November 1, 2012

Sergio Romo caught attention for more than his pitching prowess when he rode down Market Street in the Giants’ World Series celebratory parade Wednesday wearing a T-shirt that read, "“I just look illegal.”"

While the political discussion zeroes in on illegal immigration and the estimated 11 million to 11.5 million undocumented immigrants in the United States, the Migration Policy Institute reminds us that the majority of U.S. immigrants are lawful permanent residents or naturalized citizens.

Here are a few facts from the institute’s most recent report:

The total yearly inflow of immigrants has remained relatively stable at about 420,000 new arrivals a year between 1986 and 2011.

In 2011, more than 1 million people were granted green cards, that is, lawful permanent resident status, with most coming in under the category of family reunification.

Most of those new immigrants came from Mexico, China, India, the Philippines and the Dominican Republic.

California, along with New York, Florida, Texas, New Jersey and Illinois, were the top destinations for the new green-card holders.

Romo is neither an immigrant nor illegal. He was born in 1983 in Brawley, California.
