Gov. Jan Brewer's lawyers are opposing a request by opponents of Arizona's immigration enforcement law to shorten the length of time for preparing legal briefs over the opponents' bid to block enforcement of the law's most contentious section.

The governor's attorneys told U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton on Monday that the shortened briefing deadlines would deprive the state a reasonable opportunity to respond to allegations that enforcement of the section would lead to racial profiling and prolong traffic stops.

The opponents are trying to thwart a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that will let police enforce a requirement that officers check the immigration status of people they stop for other reasons.

It's unclear when the immigration status questioning requirement will take effect.
