House Speaker Paul Ryan is criticizing an effort by breakaway Republicans to force immigration votes as one that would produce “show ponies,” not legislation the president could sign into law.
The Wisconsin Republican says that for an immigration bill to pass, it needs support from both parties and from President Donald Trump. Achieving that has proven impossible so far this year, which Ryan says shows how tough the issue is.
Ryan spoke to reporters the day after a group of Republicans began collecting signatures on a petition that would require House votes on immigration bills. They remained short of their goal early Thursday afternoon.
Ryan says he’d like to have a House vote before this November’s midterm elections.
